Gao Yun served in five dynasties and was favored for four generations, pioneering the literature of the Northern Dynasties. However, the academic circle has paid little attention to him. This paper examines his reign period to clarify his contributions to the sinicization and literary development of the Northern Wei Dynasty. Through textual research, it is found that in the third year of Shenjia (430 A.D.) under the reign of Emperor Taiwu, he first entered official service as court attendant under Du Chao, Prince of Yangping. In the fifth year of Taiyan during the region of Emperor Taiwu (439 A.D.) he was entitled as Baron of Wenyang and was promoted to General Jianwu. In the first year of Taiping Zhenjun during the reign of Emperor Taiwu (440 A.D.), he was appointed as Editorial Director and collaborated with Cui Hao, the Minister of the Masses, to compile the National History. In the fourth year of Heping (463 A.D.) under Emperor Wencheng, he was appointed as General Secretary. During the second year of Huangxing (468 A.D.) under Emperor Xianwen, he concurrently served as Minister of Ceremonies and traveled to Yanzhou to worship Confucius at the Temple of Confucius. In the first year of Yanxing (471 A.D.) under Emperor Xiaowen, he was elevated to Duke of Xianyang, General Zhendong (Guard the East), and Governor of Huaizhou. In the second year of Taihe (478 A.D.), he was entitled as Great General Zhenjun (Guard the Army) and concurrently served as Director of the Central Secretariat.
